The Camberley Roof

This roof in Camberley was covered in so much moss that the customer was paying to have their gutters unblocked once a month and their conservatory roof was covered in bits of moss fallen from the main roof.

Their gutters were frequently overflowing and the moss was blocking the roof valleys, causing occasional roof leaks, usually during heavy rain…

Removing The Moss

We removed the moss by way of scraping and brushing. Fortunately, the moss came off easily and didn’t require any scrubbing.

We also replaced several broken tiles that were hidden by the moss. Next, we cleared the guttering and unblocked a rainwater pipe…

Demossed and Treated

After the moss was removed from the roof tiles we bagged it all up and discovered we had 27 large bags full of moss. There was so much that we nearly didn’t fit it all in our van.

Next, we treated the cleared tiles with a biocide (benzalkonium chloride) to inhibit regrowth.

The Farnham Roof (1)

The tiles on this roof were relaid in the late 1990s but since then, the moss had been left to grow and spread over the roof.

We setup our access towers and roof ladders and got to work removing the moss with brushes and scrapers…

Removing The Moss

The profile of these tiles slowed down the work somewhat as they’re not flat but we managed to remove over 99% of the moss on the roof and replaced a few chipped tiles we discovered on the roof as well…

The Finished Project

The roof looked completely different after the moss was removed.

The biocide we applied will kill off the lichens (the white and black surface marks on the roof) and these will disappear over the coming weeks.

The Farnham Roof (2)

This roof presented several access challenges due to the design of the roof, a lower extension at the rear of the property and a narrow gap down one side of the property.

We had to use a mix of towers, ladders, harnesses and long poles to reach the moss…

Removing The Moss

We found about a dozen chipped or broken tiles on this roof, including a couple that were in a hard-to-reach part of the roof. This and one day of rain slowed down the project which took one person a total of four days.

Finishing the Project

We finished off by clearing the moss from the easier lower roof and treating all the tiles with a biocide spray to prevent the moss from coming back for many years to come.

The customer was delighted with the finished work which exceeded his expectations.
